A good cause lost under organization growth and community needs.

Challenge

Healthier Kids Foundation began two decades ago by helping families enroll their children in health insurance. The organization has since grown into a trusted provider of screenings, education, and care coordination for Santa Clara County’s children. Still, as community needs expanded, the foundation’s growth outpaced its clarity of focus, leaving the organization at a crossroads. Leadership transitions, funding pressures, and a shifting healthcare system raised a pivotal question: how could the Healthier Kids Foundation stay responsive to emerging needs while sharpening its impact and long-term sustainability?

An asset that became a stumbling block.

Insight

Through deep stakeholder engagement, Mission Minded uncovered a defining truth: Healthier Kids Foundation’s greatest strength, its responsiveness, had also become its biggest challenge.

In striving to meet every need, Healthier Kids Foundation risked diluting its focus and pursuing funder-driven programs instead of mission-driven priorities.

The breakthrough insight was to reorient Healthier Kids Foundation’s model from program-based to service-based, prioritizing depth of impact over breadth of reach. By defining a unified framework that starts with screenings and extends through care coordination and education, Healthier Kids Foundation could ensure every child receives the right help, at the right time, for the right reason and measure success by outcomes, not outputs.

Crafting a proven roadmap for sustainability.

Journey

Mission Minded guided Healthier Kids Foundation through an inclusive, multi-phase strategic planning process that engaged staff, board members, and community partners. Together, we crafted a bold five-year roadmap organized around five strategic commitments: advancing equity, building a health ecosystem around each child, ensuring organizational sustainability, illuminating impact, and cultivating a mission-driven culture.

This collaborative approach built ownership and confidence across the organization. As CEO Melinda Snavely reflected, “Our community’s participation in this process has been invaluable. Together, we’ve charted a course toward a brighter, healthier future where children and families have the care and support they need to thrive.”

Fulfilling the mission.

Impact

Mission Minded helped Healthier Kids Foundation move from responding to community needs to building the systems and strategy to sustain health equity for every child in Santa Clara County.
