– 2 year Mission Minded employee

Working at Mission Minded

Mission Minded, a strategy firm that works exclusively with nonprofits, foundations and independent schools, seeks a full-time Director of Strategic Planning to lead the expansion of our strategic planning practice and deliver powerful plans to our outstanding clients. This work is powerful because inspired and actionable planning gives the organizations working to solve some of the world’s biggest problems the direction and focus to succeed.

We’re deeply committed to creating an inclusive environment where diverse voices partake in all aspects of our company and have been actively working on overall DEI internal practices for several years. This demands that all individuals feel respected and are treated fairly, and different viewpoints, opinions, thoughts, and ideas are encouraged and embraced. We are committed to dismantling systems of racism and sexism and consider diversity comprehensively, including race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, ability and disability, age, and other factors that shape creative perspective and professional experience.

Our vision is that no good cause should suffer from bad communication. We work toward that goal by crafting some of the most magnetic nonprofit brands around. We teach clients why strategy and brand matter and how they can amplify the work they do. Because these are organizations with limited resources, we make sure that our work is clear, cogent, and actionable. It has to ring true without the benefit of big marketing budgets. So our directors have to be creative, flexible, visionary and committed.

As Director of Strategic Planning, you will be responsible for further developing a strategic planning practice within Mission Minded that rises to the caliber and reputation of our brand and design capabilities. Under your leadership, our start-up strategic planning practice will benefit from expert oversight, evolution and optimization of methodology, successful management of client engagements, training and coaching team members, and active development of the strategic planning business.

As in all good strategy development, we are constantly pushing ourselves and our clients to think bigger, broader and deeper. We like to challenge assumptions and look at problems from multiple angles to find the best solution. So being someone who is comfortable with collaboration, input, and iterative thinking is key.

Because we’ve been around for nearly 20 years, we’ve developed a very strong reputation in the national nonprofit community. Much of our business comes through referrals from previous clients. We’re proud of that. So we set high standards for our work, and we’re very committed to excellent customer service.

We’re a small company, and we genuinely value and respect one another. Mission Minded has been work-from-home based since its founding, so we successfully create opportunities for connections with colleagues in many ways, while allowing our team to work from wherever they choose.

This is a full-time position for a national, virtual company, so this position can be based anywhere in the contiguous US. You will work from your own office and occasional travel will be required (when it is safe to resume business travel).

The salary range for this position is $110,000-$140,000 depending on experience. We offer additional non-salary benefits (such as healthcare, generous vacation policy, professional development funds, etc.) that contribute another 20-25% above this. And there is a qualitative compensation in supporting the work our clients are doing to make the world a better place.

External Responsibilities

  • Evolve and optimize our strategic planning product methodology including pricing and product improvements
  • Ensure the plans we develop inform culture, not just operations, for our clients
  • Provide overall quality control of product, with support from Directors of Brand and Education Strategy
  • Act as Senior Strategist on at least three strategic planning and/or brand strategy initiatives at any given time and as the “third” (product reviewer) on all strategic planning projects.
  • Lead business development in the nonprofit space—both outreach (conference presentations, writing blogs & whitepapers, etc.) as well as follow up, fielding new business inquiries, and developing proposals with support from Client Relationship Manager
  • Stay abreast of evolving relevant thinking on strategic planning (thought leadership) as it pertains to our work with nonprofits in all sectors, including education
  • Strive to ensure Mission Minded delights clients throughout the strategic planning engagement

Our Ideal Candidate Has

  • Minimum of fifteen years paid experience working in nonprofit leadership and consulting roles, as well as agency experience
  • Experience creating, nurturing and growing a team
  • Demonstrated interest in the nonprofit sector through employment and/or significant volunteer responsibility
  • A strong commitment to, and lived experience with, racial justice, equity and inclusion work
  • High-level understanding of strategic planning, brand strategy, website content strategy and organization
  • A dynamic presenter and facilitator
  • Excellent strategic thinking, written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience working with or within a creative organization
  • Strong team player/highly organized with an ability to effectively prioritize; experience working independently
  • Extreme enthusiasm for customer service
  • Fluent user of Microsoft Office, Keynote, Basecamp 3, Slack, Trello, Google Analytics, Google Suite

Please contact us about this opportunity if you are strategic, a self-starter, someone who enjoys working from home, a great communicator, a terrific writer, possess nearly maniacal attention to detail, and have experience in and/or a demonstrated commitment to the nonprofit sector and social justice.

We welcome your cover letter/email and resume. Please include a response to this question What does inspired strategic planning mean to you? And send to Candace Payne candace.payne@mission-minded.com with the subject line DIRECTOR OF STRATEGIC PLANNING.
